Voices of the Homeless

It’s fair to say that issues of homelessness have been among the most talked about topics in Portland for the past few years. We’ve heard from homeowners, city officials, business people, and non-profit organizations. Everyone, it seems, recognizes that having people unhoused on the streets of Portland is good for no one. The February League of Women Voters of Portland 2017-18 Civic Education program is dedicated to listening to people who have experienced homelessness. SHNA Community Rain Garden

by Carla Eisner, SHNA Board Member, Sustainability Committee Chair After months of planning and site preparation, volunteers from the Sylvan-Highlands Neighborhood Association and the Odyssey School community teamed up on November 18th to install a native plant rain garden on the Odyssey campus. The project was funded by a Neighborhood Small Grant award from NWNW and ONI. Friends of the Pearl Foot Patrol Workshop: Creating Good Energy by Stan Penkin Pearl District Foot Patrollers turned out on a recent Saturday morning for the first of several planned workshops to better prepare them for situations that might be encountered on the street. Brad Taylor, a Mental Health Specialist from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, engaged the group on ways to recognize, respond and report persons experiencing mental health illness and related issues.
