Voices of the Homeless

It’s fair to say that issues of homelessness have been among the most talked about topics in Portland for the past few years. We’ve heard from homeowners, city officials, business people, and non-profit organizations. Everyone, it seems, recognizes that having people unhoused on the streets of Portland is good for no one. The February League of Women Voters of Portland 2017-18 Civic Education program is dedicated to listening to people who have experienced homelessness. Winter Shelters

Winter shelters are opening- volunteer and donate now! As the temperatures drop outside, winter homeless shelters are opening around the city to make sure that people experiencing homelessness are safe, warm and dry and they need community members to get involved to support the people who turn to them. Here are the current shelters in NW and Downtown Portland and ways that you can support them: 5th Avenue Center- 421 SW 5th Ave The 5th Avenue Shelter is a temporary, low-barrier overnight shelter for up to 75 men with priority for people 55 and older, those with disabilities, and Veterans. Affordable Housing Bond Community Survey

Take the survey before September 23 to have your opinions heard. In November 2016, Portland voters approved a historic funding source, the Affordable Housing Bond, to increase affordable housing in our communities. This new funding source will provide $258.4 million for affordable housing and produce a total of 1,300 housing units.
