Now Live: Online Source for Information on Homelessness Initiatives
Mayor Charlie Hales today announced the launch of the Homelessness Toolkit, — a single resource for information on City homelessness initiatives, from safe sleeping guidelines to volunteer opportunities.
“My office has received countless phone calls, e-mails, and social media messages from Portlanders who want information about our efforts to manage livability in the City,” Mayor Hales said. “We heard them, and we responded with an easily accessible warehouse of information.”
The online resource includes quick links to the One Point of Contact, a system designed to ameliorate frustration in reporting campsites by providing one designated place to share concerns about livability issues.
It also connects to:
- Frequently Asked Questions: Answers to questions about homelessness in Portland and the City’s initiatives.
- Homelessness Statistics: Summaries of homelessness statistics to better understand the issue.
- Managing Life on the Streets: Information about initiatives aimed at balancing safe sleep with livability, including the Day Storage Pilot Program, High-Intensity Street Engagement Program, and Camping.
- A Home for Everyone: Information on A Home For Everyone, the regional collaborative working to end homelessness.
- Shelter & Temporary Places to Sleep: Summary information about Portland’s shelters and temporary places to sleep.
- Goal: Permanent Housing: Information on City Council’s tenant protection actions and affordable housing investments.
- How You Can Help: Contact information to organizations seeking volunteers and donations, and informational cards (in English and Spanish) to distribute so people sleeping outside can learn the guidelines.
“Four months into the State of Emergency in Housing and Homelessness, I’m asking Portlanders for continued patience and a recognition that we are all in this together,” Mayor Hales said. “Until we reach our goal of having a permanent home for all Portlanders, our short-term approach is to balance the need for people sleeping outside to be safe, with the entire city’s need for health, safety and livability.
“We hope the Homelessness Toolkit will provide Portlanders with the information they need to understand our pragmatic and humane approach.”
