Westside Watershed Resource Center Helps Friendly House Enhance Their Mosaic with Natives

We are very excited to share the results of a morning of hard work and rain from this April event at this great nonprofit. The SW corner of NW 26th and Thurman was overgrown with grass and having issues absorbing rainwater. With the help of six volunteers and Friendly House’s groundskeeper, we were able to convert the space into a rock garden of native plants (kinnikinnick, creeping Oregon grape, fescue and Oregon stonecrop). These low growing natives are climate resilient and well suited to help absorb rainwater in the space, as well as accentuate the beautiful mosaic sculpture.

This was WWRC’s first time supporting Friendly House in NW Portland. Friendly House has done a great job of including natives in their landscaping, which made it easy for us to select plants that fit well with what’s there. We had a great time and are very appreciative of all the great volunteers who came out and helped.

The Westside Watershed Resource Center is a program funded through a partnership between the Bureau of Environmental Services and Neighbors West Northwest. Learn more about this free community resource at https://www.westsidewatersheds.org/.
